A celebration of visionaries: "The First Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge" concludes in triumph
(Hong Kong, November 20, 2020) “The First Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge 2020” (AIC 2020) and awards ceremony successfully concluded today at Hong Kong Science Park. The milestone event was co-organised by The Greater Bay Area (GBA) 5G Industry Alliance (The Alliance), China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). The competition, which centred on the theme of “Unleash the power of 5G - Build a Better Life", attracted more than 55 participating teams. They competed in various categories for multiple awards, showcasing a plethora of diverse 5G industry application solutions.
The AIC 2020 is the first large-scale innovation and technology competition held by The Alliance since its establishment last year. It was jointly initiated by CMHK, ASTRI, and HKSTP, to discover and bolster innovation and technology talent. The objective was to encourage students, start-ups and innovators to harness their creativity and plan 5G innovations and application solutions in seven areas: education, entertainment, finance, property management, logistics and transportation, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing.
With the commercialisation of 5G mobile communication services in Hong Kong and the GBA, the competition aligns and promotes R&D and 5G applications to propel the development of smart cities in the region. It empowers numerous industries with the introduction of new and innovative 5G applications.
A total of 55 teams from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao participated in the competition. The final today gathered 10 elite teams to demonstrate their 5G innovative application solutions on-site. A professional judging panel composed of industry leaders scored the entries based on five criteria: innovation and creativity, functionality, benefit and quality, market potential, and social impact on the GBA 5G network. Multiple awards were presented, as well as special bonuses and prizes (Please see Appendix for details). Exemplary teams have the opportunity to become members of the Fostering Award Programme. These members receive financial and technical support to ensure their award-winning 5G innovative application solutions can be implemented expeditiously. On-site, organizers and partners held technology showcases to feature other pioneering industrial applications and connect like-minded industry stakeholders to communicate with each other, explore business opportunities, and unleash the infinite possibilities of 5G.
Mr. Sean Lee, The GBA 5G Industry Alliance Founding Chairman, Director and CEO of CMHK said: “5G networks have been continuously developing in the GBA and commercial applications are still in the embryonic stage. The Alliance hopes that through this innovative technology competition, we can discover and absorb innovation and technology talent so that participants can put their innovative technology concepts into practice. Also, we strongly encourage the industry to take advantage of 5G features, to deploy new 5G application solutions that can be widely applied to various industry sectors, to build an open and win-win 5G industry ecosystem."
Ir Peter Yeung, Head of Electronics & ICT Clusters of HKSTP, said: “5G is set to revolutionise the way we live and work as well as the development of future technologies. The collaboration with the Alliance, CMHK and ASTRI opens a new avenue for HKSTP to spur innovation with 5G. As the city’s flagship incubation and R&D base, HKSTP serves as a living lab for more than 900 technology companies to test and commercialise their ideas to solutions. Partnering with world-class industry leaders, we support our park companies in 5G communication and industry application development from technical services in hardware prototyping to RF and FPGA training as well as business and POC opportunities while deploying 5G network at the Park, building a vibrant 5G ecosystem for Smart City development in Hong Kong and the GBA.”
Dr. Justin Chuang, Vice President, Communications Technologies, ASTRI said: “ASTRI is committed to developing and building key software, intelligent application platforms and next-generation communication network solutions based on 5G technology to promote the development of Hong Kong into a smart city. In The First Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge, I am delighted to see many outstanding contestants using scientific research and boundless creativity to design brand new 5G application solutions that catalyse rapid scientific research in the GBA."
The Alliance has been committed to promoting 5G development in the GBA, providing a platform for resource sharing in the region and building an inclusive 5G ecological chain. In early November, The Alliance and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao-Bay Area Economic And Trade Association successfully co-organised the Third Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Summit that featured the theme, "Embrace the new era of 5G". Over 200 prominent talents and enterprise representatives attended the meeting, with a lineup of illustrious officiating guests, including Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, Dr. David Chung, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, and Mr. Wu Kejian, Honorary Advisor of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Association. Other industry elites shared their insights on 5G development trends, and discussed how 5G could help promote the technological development and construction of smart city clusters in the GBA. There was a 5G application demonstration area on-site to enhance understanding of the latest 5G applications and deepen the public’s awareness of 5G solutions. These culminated in the promotion of sustainable economic development of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
The Third Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Summit attracted over 200 prominent attendees. The officiating guests included Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng Yeuk-wah, Dr. David Chung, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, and Mr. Wu Kejian, Honorary Advisor of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Economic and Trade Association.
