Utilizing 5G technology to promote diversified and enhanced teaching and learning experiences by new cross-curricular interactive learning

Hong Kong - 15 July, 2021 – China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has long been committed to pushing forward the development of 5G technology, maintaining close cooperation with various industries and actively integrating 5G into different industries to synergize the transformation of traditional industries as it continues to discover innovations. CMHK announced recently that its customer base had exceeded 5 million and unveiled to the public its future development blueprint, in which the further application of 5G technology in education and nurturing the younger generation is one of the utmost directions. In 2019, CMHK joined with the education sector to launch the 1st “5G STEM Pilot School Initiative” with the theme of 5G STEM, keen to apply 5G technology to STEM teaching and learning so that students can have a better learning experience. Now for 2021, CMHK launched the 2nd "5G Campus Pilot School Initiative" with the theme of "Digital Campus", aiming to bring 5G technology into schools and enhance campus facilities and information technology. Meanwhile, CMHK also organized the "Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition" to bring new cross-curricular interactive learning.

CMHK launched the 2nd "5G Campus Pilot School Initiative" & "Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition" kick-off ceremony in Hong Kong Science Park today. Dr. Max Ma, Director and Executive Vice President of CMHK, and Mr. Waynffly Zhong, Chief Marketing Officer of CMHK, attended the kick-off ceremony. CMHK also invited Mr. Wong Sing, President of Modern Education & Research Institute, Mr. Yam Siu Kei of Hong Kong Learning Activity Promotion Society, Dr. Rocky Cheng, President of Hong Kong Computer Society and Chairman of The Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association Information Technology Committee, Mr. Michael Lui, Senior Curriculum Development Officer (Technology Education) of Education Bureau, Mr. Reggie Wong, Chairman of The Chamber of Hong Kong Computer Industry, Principal Wong Kam Leung, Chairman of Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, Dr. Ted Suen, MH, the CIO of the MTR Corporation Limited and Mr. Jonas Chan, Executive Director of the Asia Television Holdings Limited to join CMHK in leading the education sector and young people to the beginning of a new 5G era.

The education sector joins hands to accelerate the use of 5G in schools to nurture young technological talents

The 2nd "5G Campus Pilot School Initiative" & "Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition" received overwhelming support from the education sector. Apart from its notable officiating guests, the kick-off ceremony held today was attended by nearly 200 representatives from the education sector, including more than 60 school headmasters and teachers, organizers of the Pilot School Initiative and partners.

Dr. Max Ma, Director and Executive Vice President of CMHK, said, "5G is the cornerstone of smart city development. CMHK has been promoting the development of the smart city in Hong Kong, and not only has it invested plenty of resources in developing Hong Kong's 5G network, but it has also taken responsibility to nurture the new generation of innovative technology talents. The 1st “5G STEM Pilot School Initiative” was launched in 2019 with encouraging results and enthusiastic support from various sectors. Therefore, we have joined with the Modern Education & Research Institute and Hong Kong Learning Activity Promotion Society to launch the 2nd "5G Campus Pilot School Initiative" & "Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition." These programs will help to cultivate and deepen students' understanding of innovative technology and 5G in a multi-dimensional way, to nurture the innovative technology talents needed in the 21st century.”

Mr. Wong Sing, President of Modern Education & Research Institute said at the kick-off ceremony, “We are glad to cooperate with CMHK and Hong Kong Learning Activity Promotion Society again, promoting students' understanding of innovative technology and 5G together. This is in addition to providing diversified programs and resources for teachers, students, parents and education groups, and so we hope to lay a solid foundation of knowledge in innovation and technology for Hong Kong students.”

Injecting new elements of interactive learning and integrating 5G technology into the campus

The 2nd “5G Campus Pilot School Initiative" aims to upgrade campus facilities and informational standards of the 50 selected schools. To achieve this target, CMHK has launched a series of initiatives, including 5G smart classrooms, 5G live classes, 5G AI e-learning platform and visits to 5G laboratories. Students will be able to experience smart campus technology products developed under the 5G concept and learn more about the future development of 5G. In addition, the new "Sync-Class Pro" will bring together top ranked teachers specialised in various aspects of specialised education to help solve students' learning difficulties in real-time through this new interactive learning platform during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the platform uses big data to track learning progress. By fully integrating 5G technology into education, all primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong will be able to learn anytime, anywhere.

"Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition" nurtures a new generation of technology talents

Apart from the 2nd "5G Campus Pilot School Initiative", CMHK, together with the Modern Education & Research Institute and Hong Kong Learning Activity Promotion Society, organized the "Hong Kong Inter-Primary School General Studies Competition". With the theme of 5G technology and innovative technology to explore students' academic knowledge, technological application, problem-solving and teamwork skills, the program intends to enhance students' understanding of innovative technology and 5G. In turn, this will sharpen their creativity and logical thinking skills, thereby nurturing the technological and innovative talents needed in the 21st century.

Since its launch, the competition has received an overwhelming response, with over 18,000 students from nearly 60 schools applying for the competition. After a shortlisting process, 200 students from 40 schools were selected as finalists and the champion school will be crowned at the end of July.

5G technology opens up a new generation of learning

To showcase ways in which 5G technology can contribute to the new generation of learning, a Smart Campus Technology Exhibition was set up at the ceremony, with booths including "Sync-Class Pro", the showcase results of the 1st 5G STEM Pilot School Initiative, China Mobile's 5G smart classroom solution, 5G integrated communication solution, drone obstacle course display and robotic collaboration competition display.
