Hong Kong - 1 November, 2021 – China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited (CMHK) has always sought to be customer-oriented and innovative in its approach to serving the people of Hong Kong. Bringing superior high-speed network services and a 'smart life' experience, CMHK's customer base has exceeded 5 million^ in June this year, and it was also crowned the 5G network speed champion, having been recognised with the Hong Kong's Fastest 5G Network Award - First Half of 2021# by Ookla® the company behind Speedtest®. CMHK's customer base continues to grow and reach new heights, with today's announcement that the number of 5G customers has officially exceeded 1 million*, marking another important milestone.
To celebrate these new achievements, CMHK held a press conference today, at which it officially announced the positive news that the number of 5G customers has exceeded 1 million. The press conference was attended by CMHK's senior management, including Dr. Li Feng, Chairman of CMHK, Mr. Sean Lee, Director and Chief Executive Officer of CMHK, Dr. Max Ma, Director & Executive Vice President of CMHK, Mr. Ge Jianbao, Director & Executive Vice President of CMHK and Mr. Waynffly Zhong, Chief Marketing Officer of CMHK, to witness this momentous occasion.
Dr. Li Feng, Chairman of CMHK said, "We are delighted to announce that the number of 5G customers has exceeded 1 million just a few short months after surpassing the 5 million mark for our overall customer base in June. This year, CMHK has achieved several remarkable results, reflecting the company's efforts to invest significant resources and work with various industries to actively promote the adoption of 5G network applications. Meanwhile, these achievements give us more impetus to lead the industry with our forward-looking market approach. In line with the national strategy of the Greater Bay Area Development and the future direction of the Hong Kong Government, we are committed to promoting the integration of 5G into all industries, helping Hong Kong build a 'smart city', and creating a shared 5G smart future for all.”
An important component of future-forward infrastructures, 5G will accelerate the transformation and the building of a digital society through its combination with Cloud Computing, Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). CMHK was the first mobile network operator to launch 5G services in Hong Kong in April 2020, promoting the integration of 5G across industries. CMHK obtained the first enterprise 5G construction service project in Hong Kong - Hong Kong International Airport 5G Infrastructure Project, built Hong Kong's first 5G smart bank, and the first 5G smart building. CMHK also launched a Hong Kong market-first 5G networked drone platform, 5G smart construction sites, 5G outdoor live-teaching and other 5G applications across multiple use cases, promoting the further development of a 'Smart Hong Kong.'
CMHK has announced earlier that it has successfully acquired for a total of 90 MHz of radio spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2.5/2.6 GHz and 4.9 GHz frequency bands, representing an investment of HK$649 million. Together with the 26/28 GHz frequency bands previously assigned by the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA), and 120 MHz of radio spectrum in the 3.3, 3.5 and 4.9 GHz frequency bands acquired in 2019, CMHK continues to lead the market as the mobile network operator with the most radio spectrum resources in Hong Kong.
CMHK is looking forward to showcasing the latest developments in 5G applications to the public at a large-scale exhibition at the end of the year.
