【Hong Kong – December 17, 2021】"The 2nd Greater Bay Area 5G Application and Innovation Challenge" and awards ceremony concluded successfully today. This milestone event was co-organised by five organisations, including The Greater Bay Area 5G Industry Alliance (The Alliance), China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK), Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Hong Kong Cyberport and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP). The competition, which centred on the theme of "5G Accelerates the Smart GBA", supported the 5G application development advocated by the Hong Kong SAR Government, and aims to contribute to the application of 5G technology in various industries. Furthermore, the program has cemented ties between Hong Kong and GBA, and accelerated the establishment of a comprehensive 5G smart city.

To commemorate this special occasion, honoured guests including Dr. David Chung, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR, Prof. Witman Hung, JP, Hong Kong Deputy, 13th National People's Congress; Principal Liaison Officer for Hong Kong, Shenzhen Qianhai Authority, Mr. Zhang Guolai, Bureau Level Official of Youth Affairs of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government, Mr. Peter Yan, JP, CEO of the Hong Kong Cyberport and Mr. Sean Lee, Founding Chairman of The GBA 5G Industry Alliance and Director and CEO of CMHK were invited to be the officiating guests. In addition, Ms. Cari Wu, Chief Systems Manager (Smart City) of Office of the Government Chief Information Officer of HKSAR, Mr. Peter Mok, Head of The Greater Bay Area of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Ir Andrew Young, Associate Director of Sino Group and Chairman of The GBA 5G Industry Alliance Real Estate and Property Management Committee, and Mr. Peter Koo, APAC Leader of IT & Specialized Assurance of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and Mr. Gordon Guo, CEO of Bonjour Technology were invited to be on the judging panel; while Dr. Rocky Cheng, Chief Information Officer of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and Mr. Tony Hau, Chairman & CEO of Multibyte Info Technology Limited and Chairman for the Executive Committee of The GBA 5G Industry Alliance also attended the event.

The competition brought together participants from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and nearly 60 creative and talented teams, including start-ups, innovators and students, harnessed their creativity to plan 5G innovations and smart GBA application solutions in seven areas: education, entertainment, finance, property management, logistics and transportation, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing. The final today gathered 10 elite teams to demonstrate their 5G innovative application solutions on-site at Cyberport. A professional judging panel composed of industry leaders scored the entries based on five criteria: innovation and creativity, functionality, benefit and quality, market potential, and social impact on the GBA 5G network. Multiple awards were presented, as well as special bonuses and prizes (please see Appendix for details). Exemplary teams have the opportunity to become members of the Fostering Award Programme. These members receive financial and technical support to ensure their award-winning 5G innovative application solutions can be implemented expeditiously. On-site, there was a technology showcase area for the 10 elite teams to feature their 5G innovative applications and connect with like-minded industry stakeholders to communicate with each other, explore business opportunities, and unleash the infinite possibilities of 5G.

Mr. Sean Lee, The GBA 5G Industry Alliance Founding Chairman, Director and CEO of CMHK, said, "As the development of 5G technology becomes mature, and the national Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan emphasises the need to develop Hong Kong into an international I&T hub. This year’s competition continued in The Greater Bay Area and was co-organised with The Alliance, ASTRI, Hong Kong Cyberport and HKSTP. We wish to nurture innovation and technology professionals, provide abundant resources to them, provide fresh impetus for the development of the 5G industry in the Greater Bay Area, and promote the diversified development of the industry through the competition."

Officiating guest Dr. David Chung, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR, delivered the welcome speech at the event: "High network speed, low latency, high capacity and large connection possibilities are the characteristics of 5G. It has a broad application area, huge overall development potential, and is bringing unlimited opportunities for various industries such as finance, retail, healthcare, entertainment and education, which will greatly improve peoples’ living standard. The Hong Kong SAR Government is committed to promoting the popularity of 5G and advocating innovative development. As revealed from a recent international market study, coverage and stability of 5G are amongst the highest in the world. With advanced technological development, we should seize the development opportunity in GBA, achieve synergistic effects and advocate for the development of smart clusters in GBA. I would like to take this opportunity to thank The GBA 5G Industry Alliance for providing technical support to talented participants from all walks of life, and for contributing to the cultivation of innovative and technological capabilities. Finally, I hope everyone will actively participate in the voting of Legislative Council elections this Sunday and build a brighter future for Hong Kong."

One of the Co-organised unit leaders, Mr. Peter Yan, JP, CEO of the Hong Kong Cyberport, also said at the event, "As 5G mobile networks become popular, advocacy of 5G applications development in start-up clusters becomes more important to Cyberport. 5G application is particularly significant in developing smart life and smart cities. Therefore, Cyberport has increased its 5G coverage, provided a technical environment, encouraged and subsidised start-ups to implement 5G applications; and, in line with Communications Authority Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G, promote the industrial convergence and open up a larger market in GBA for start-ups since April last year. I hope that the competition can provide more shared resources for the implementation of "smart GBA". Cyberport will also promote smart life and smart city development, and help with building GBA as an international innovation and technology hub."

Prof. Witman Hung, JP, Hong Kong Deputy to National People's Congress (NPC) and Principal Liaison Officer for Hong Kong, Shenzhen Qianhai Authority, also commented on behalf of the judging panel, "Thanks to the maturity of 5G technology development, the quality of participating teams have built upon that of last year, indicating the positive result of promoting 5G technological development, and of the innovation and technology industry by the Hong Kong government. On the other hand, I see the creativity of Hong Kong students through the competition, which has become a model in the industry. I hope the GBA Industry Alliance will keep organising more 5G innovation and technology events, and continue to nurture more industry professionals."
